Clemson University - Packaging Science Department
Address: Department of Packaging Science
B 212 P&A Bldg, Clemson University
City: Clemson, SC 29634-0370
Country: United States
Clemson University is the only university in the Southeast, and one of only four academic institutions in the United States, that offers a four-year program leading to a BS degree in Packaging Science. It stresses the scientific and technological aspects of packaging with two options available - one in food packaging and the other in general packaging.
Requirements for graduation include biology, chemistry, physics, English, mathematics, graphics, statistics, microbiology, social science and humanities, in addition to required courses in all aspects of packaging science. A M.S. degree in Packaging Science and a Ph.D. degree in Food Technology are also available.
Classroom and laboratory facilities are equipped with scientific instruments and equipment useful in package development and evaluation. A close relationship with the food science and graphic communications departments provides an ideal atmosphere for up-to-date-technology in these related fields.
Field trips to packaging companies are included in most packaging courses and students have the opportunity to attend national packaging conferences. Support for these and other student activities is provided by the packaging industry.
DEPARTMENT VISION
The primary focus of the Clemson University Dept. of Packaging Science will be an undergraduate program emphasizing Food Packaging and General Packaging. We will be best in class (world-wide) in this program. The program will stress continuous improvement in the quality of the students. The program will develop benchmarks to measure progress toward these objectives.
By the year 2005 we will comprise a minimum of 200 undergraduate students with a mixture of 50% from South Carolina and 50% from out-of-state, including international students. Alliances will be developed with international packaging programs as we increasingly serve a global industry.
We will have an M.S. program in Packaging Science, and will participate in interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs at Clemson.
Continuing Education and research will be an integral part of our Packaging Science program and will be strongly supported by industry. Our facilities will be upgraded as necessary, with the support of industry.
Our Advisory Board will work closely with Clemson faculty and administration and will help raise funds and recruit students in support of Departmental goals.
